The Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to the summit of Mauna Kea shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday for a report of a man who had slid down an ice slope.
Officials say the male in his 20’s was separated from his group and slid 700 feet down an ice slope and couldn’t get back up.
He reportedly began suffering from the early stages of hypothermia.
HFD and Pohakuloa Training Area crews worked together to use a rope system to extricate the victim.
PTA medics examined the man and released him without treatment or transport.
