The Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to a swimmer in distress off the waters of Mackenzie Recreation Area on Thursday.
HFD officials say crews responded to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. in response to a call about a fisherman who fell into the water while fishing along the cliffs.
Upon arrival, it was determined that the fisherman was a 16-year-old boy who was in distress as he tried to fight the current after falling into the water. A lifeguard was able to reach the victim and secure a rescue buoy to him.
Chopper 1 used rescue personnel to extract the boy and lifeguard from the water using a Billy-Pugh net.
Additional information regarding the boy’s condition was not immediately available.
