Fire Burns Kea`au Home

Hawai`i County Fire Department firefighters responded to an early morning structure fire on 35th Avenue in Kea`au on Sunday.

Crews arrived after midnight to find a 1,056 square foot single-story home with flames self-ventilating from windows on three sides of the structure.

A single occupant of the home was able to self evacuate.

During the initial attack, the main electrical line above the meter was arching, with periodic small bursts of electrical activity. Hawai`i Electric Light arrived and disconnected the power at the road.

The fire was deemed out by 2 a.m.

HFD estimated the loss at $188,000.
