The Hawai`i County Fire Department conducted an ocean rescue near the breakwall in Hilo on Saturday.
Fire crews responded shortly before 9 a.m. to find a one man canoe paddler waving their arms and paddle in distress just inside the tip of the breakwall.
Officials say the individual was in a damaged canoe.
HFD Chopper 1 responded to gain a visual of the canoe with a person swimming alongside it. A rescue boat was used to assist the paddler who was returned to shore without injury.
