Erick Becomes Major Cat3 Hurricane Far East-Southeast of Hawai`i

Hurricane Erick is centered as of 5 a.m. HST (11 a.m. EDT) over the Central Pacific Ocean about 920 miles (1485 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. It’s moving toward the west near 17 mph (28 km/h). A turn toward the west-northwest at a slightly slower forward speed is expected later today. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts – a category 3 hurricane, which is a major hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km). Some additional strengthening is expected later today. By Wednesday, gradual weakening is possible, with a more rapid weakening trend expected on Thursday.
