A fire burned along Kipimana Street in Shipman Industrial Park early Monday morning, according to the Hawai`i County Fire Department.
Responding to a 1:06 a.m. alarm, crews arrived to find a 36,000 square foot warehouse approximately 50 percent full of compressed recycled bales of cardboard, paper and plastics. The items were stacked up to 16 feet high and the fire was burning in several areas.
A ladder truck and hand lines were used to control the fire by 5 a.m.
The Department of Public Works brought in a front loaders and that along with one on site was used to remove material to the exterior of the building for final extinguishment, per HFD officials.
Various flare ups occurred during the removal process when smoldering material was exposed to air.
The fire was deemed out by 6:30 a.m.
HFD says that building was saved from potential substantial damage.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
