Mayor Kim Signs Mandatory Evacuation Order

Hawai`i County Mayor Harry Kim signed a mandatory evacuation order on Thursday.

The order, which can be read in full below, is for the Leilani Estates subdivision east of Pomaikai Street.

The mandatory evacuation is active as of 12 p.m. on Thursday. Residents who are still in the area have 24 hours from that point to leave, per the evacuation order.

Those who ignore the evacuation order may be subject to arrest and liability for any recovery costs, as emergency responders may not be able to access the area should it be cut off.

Crews make visual observations of activity at fissure 8 around 5:30 a.m. on May 31. Fountain heights this morning continue to reach 70 to 80 m (230 to 260 ft) above ground level. The fountaining feeds a lava flow that is moving to the northeast along Highway 132 into the area of Noni Farms road. USGS photo.
