The Hawai`i Department of Transportation says potential traffic delays are possible as heavy machinery is transported from the vicinity of Waikoloa Road to Kalapana for use in preparation of lower Puna evacuation routes on Thursday.
There will be intermittent road closures from approximately 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. along the Waikoloa roadway (Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. to Māmalahoa Highway 190), Saddle Road, Puainako Street, Highway 11, and Highway 130.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution and expect delays escorts will have to temporarily block the roadway in certain areas to allow for the large transport trucks to safely transverse this route to Kalapana.
Photo: May 31 image from helicopter overflight that shows advancing lobes from fissure 8 (fissure 8 is not pictured but located to the right, out of view). Advance rates were less than 100 yards per hour for the three lobes of the flow, as measured during the overnight hours. The flow moved north of Highway 132 in the vicinity of Noni Farms and Halekamahina roads, from which the two easternmost lobes advanced in a more east-northeasterly direction while the westernmost lobe advanced in a northeasterly direction.
