The Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to traffic accident along Highway 19 in the vicinity of the Maulua Gulch in Laupahoehoe on Friday.
Crews arrived on scene at 1:15 p.m. where they found that a Chevy Express van has collided with a Toyota Corolla and a Hawaiian Telcom Bucket Truck.
All vehicles reportedly had extensive damage and the male driver of the Chevy was trapped in the vehicle with the driving area crushed pinning him. The man was extricated with power tools. He suffered multisystem trauma and was transported to Hilo Medical Center.
The female in the Toyota suffered stable injuries, per officials.
The Hawaiian Telcom driver refused treatment.
The accident closed the roadway for two hours.
