A woman is missing after being swept into the Wailuku River Friday evening.
Hawai`i County Fire Department officials say they responded to the scene at 6:13 p.m., where they met with a man on the bridge who said he and a female companion had been hiking above the waterfall when they were both swept downstream by quickly rising water.
Authorities say the man was able to make it to the riverbank but said he lost contact with the woman.
Extremely high flood water prevented HFD from conducting an in-water search, and a search along the riverbank from above Pi`ihonua Bridge to Boiling Pots led to no findings.
The search was called off at 7:25 p.m. due to darkness but continued again Saturday morning.
