Apparent Drowning Incident at Makalawena Claims a Life

Hawai`i County Fire Department rescue crews responded to an apparent drowning Tuesday in the area of Makalawena Beach in Kona.

In response to a 3 p.m. alarm, HFD located individuals reportedly in distress at Makalawena Beach via Chopper 2.

Initial reports indicated that there were three swimmers in distress, including one who could not swim. As the incident progressed, fire dispatch reportedly learned that all parties were on the shore with CPR initiated and in progress.

The drowning victim was a male, approximately 20-years-old, according to HFD. He was pronounced dead at the scene following efforts to revive him. His identity has not been released.

A second individual was extricated via Chopper 2, with non life threatening injuries, and transported to Kona Community Hospital via an awaiting ground unit.
