Snow Covers Summit of Mauna Kea

Snow covered the summit of Mauna Kea on Monday

In an afternoon message, Mauna Kea rangers reported that the road to the summit of Mauna Kea is closed at the Visitor Information Station at the 9,200 foot elevation due to hail and snowfall accumulating on the roadways causing unsafe road conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory through Tuesday afternoon.

Rangers atop Mauna Kea say that road closures due to weather are rare from April 1 through November 30.

Heavy downpours have also prompted a Flash Flood Watch for the island.
