The Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to a report of a missing snorkeler at Old Airport Beach in Kailua-Kona.

HFD personnel met with the reporting spouse just before 6 p.m. Sunday who noted that her husband, a 51-year-old, was last seen about three hours earlier when he walked north up the beach to go snorkeling.

The woman reported that she did not see when we entered the water but searched for him for a chunk of time before calling 9-1-1.

Rescue crews searched offshore with rescue boat 7, as well as along the shoreline by foot. Chopper 2 searched both the shoreline and offshore but the man was not located.

The United States Coast Guard also assisted in the efforts, continuing to search for the man once county crews called off the search for the night due to visibility at about 9:15 p.m.

Just after 1:30 a.m., crews aboard the USCG Helo reported a body had been located about 1.5 miles offshore of Old Airport.

HFD launched a rescue boat with three personnel who retrieved the body just before 3 am.

The body was taken to Honokohau Harbor where it was turned over to the Hawai`i Police Department.

A total of 10 HFD personnel responded during the incident.
