Highway 19 Reopens in Honomu, Crash Claims a Life

Highway 19 in the area of Honomu reopened Monday morning following a traffic collision on Saturday that resulted in a death.

The Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to the scene 1:57 p.m. Saturday to find that a vehicle had collided head on with a Hawai`i Gas tanker.

HFD found the tanker truck upside down with the cab on fire and the passenger vehicle with severe damage.

A woman in her thirties was pronounced dead at the scene. Three individuals, as well as the tanker truck driver were transported to Hilo Medical Center, according to HFD.

According to Hawai`i Gas officials, “The fire on the propane truck was extinguished at approximately 5:30 a.m., Monday. Hawai`i Gas and fire officials at the scene on Saturday night had decided it was safer to let the propane burn off the remaining contents of the tanker.”

Hawai`i County Civil Defense previously noted that the accident had also involved a cement truck.

The identity of the woman has not been released.
