The Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to a structure fire early Monday morning at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporations facility just outside of Hilo.
HFD officials say the blaze was visible from Highway 11 as crews arrived on scene just before 3 a.m.
A 20-foot-by-30-foot structure at the rear of the plant, described as a mac nut husk dryer, was found in flames.
The fire was noted as under control by 3:13 a.m. and deemed out at 7:45 a.m.
Wet down and mop up activities were prolonged due to access and the quantity of macadamia nut mulch, per HFD.
In total 15 HFD firefighters responded.
Cause of the fire, causing approximately $105,000 in damage, is under investigation.
