Victims in May Kona Accident Identified

The Hawai`i Police Department has released updated information regarding a May traffic accident in Kona. 

Autopsies conducted on May 19, determined that the male operator and passenger of a 1998 Toyota 4Runner involved in a fatal traffic collision in Kona on May 17 died from injuries sustained in the accident.

At the time of autopsy, the positive identification of both males was pending the results of DNA identification.

Police say DNA identification was received on July 31.

The operator of the 1998 Toyota 4Runner has been identified as 33-year-old Hector Alfredo Barrientos Vigil.

Vigil’s passenger has been identified as 33-year-old Obdulio Eliseo Garcia Orellano.

Both victims are from Captain Cook.

A third victim was identified by HPD on May 19 as 37-year-old Hailame Lavaka of Kamuela.
