The Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to an area off Liliuokalani Gardens Saturday afternoon, where they found an individual performing CPR on a body that was located floating head down in the water.
HFD officials say they extracted the victim onto shore and into a medic unit as they continued CPR. The victim was transported to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.
According to HFD the individual who alerted authorities noted that he thought the victim was snorkeling before realizing the body was bobbing face down. The man reportedly waded out into the water and pulled the victim onto the rocks and began CPR.
The individual died, per HFD. A cause of death is currently unknown and under investigation.
