A brush fire on Monday that caused the closure of Highway 19 for several hours was the result of a fully engulfed vehicle.

Hawai`i County Fire Department responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

HFD officials say flames from the vehicle “ignited brush along the highway, that quickly spread to pastureland and eucalyptus forest.”

Strong winds were the culprit of the rapid spread.

The fire was under control by 4:30 p.m. but has not been determined to be “out.” Fire crews remain on the scene to continue to extinguish the fire, with the assistance of Chopper 1.

The cause of the vehicle fire is unknown. No injuries were sustained in the fire.
