The Hawaiʻi Police Department has issued a parking lot awareness notice.
HPD officials are reminding motorists to operate at a raised awareness when operating their vehicles in parking lots.
Twenty-two percent of traffic accidents reportedly occur in parking lots, with the majority associated with vehicles backing up. Rushing towards open stalls is another likely cause of parking lot accidents.
“By being vigilant and increasing awareness of our surroundings, we can reduce accidents and injuries,” a police media release read on Wednesday.
Authorities suggest that motorist check their surrounding carefully before reversing their vehicles and be aware of pedestrians going to and from other vehicles.
Vehicles entering parking areas should proceed slowly and be alert to reversing vehicles and pedestrians in the area.
Pedestrians should use caution, especially when accompanied by children.
