Kailua Bay Remains Closed Following Hazmat Overflow

Hawai`i County Civil Defense issued a Tuesday morning message regarding the sewage spill in Kailua-Kona on Monday.

According to Civil Defense, Kailua Bay remains closed as a result from Kamakahonu Beach to Hulihee Palace seaward out to 1000 feet. This sewage spill was contained on Monday.

Results from water samples taken on Monday are expected later today.

Civil Defense urges the public to cease all water activity in this area until tests indicate bacteria levels are normal.

The Department of Environmental Management reports that work has started on repairs to the ruptured main at Ali`i Drive and Palani Road.  Traffic delays are expected in this area for the duration of repairs and motorists should use alternate routes.
