The Hawai`i Police Department reports that Palani Road is now open in both directions in the area of an earlier main break, which was initially noted as a water main break and later reported by HPD as a sewage main break.
Hawai`i County Civil Defense says that the Department of Environmental Management reports that there was a sewage spill due to a ruptured main at the corner of Ali`i Drive and Palani Road.
The sewage has entered the ocean at Kailua Bay. Kailua Bay from Kamakahonu Beach to Hulihee Palace is currently closed out to 1,000 feet from the shore. Water samples have been taken and the Department of Health Clean Water Branch has been notified.
Repairs to the main will begin Tuesday, according to Civil Defense.
Water activity in the area should be avoided in the area.
Road impacts should be anticipated as repairs are being made.
