Hawai`i County Fire Department rescue personnel assisted two swimmers in distress this afternoon.
Just after 12 p.m. HFD arrived to find the swimmers and a lifeguard about half a mile south of Punalu`u Beach Park, about 100 yards off-shore. The lifeguard was signaling for help.
Two fire company personnel swam out to the swimmers to help with stabilizing and swimming out to open ocean, a rescue specialist was dropped into the water via a rescue chopper. The swimmers along with the lifeguard, and rescue personnel were pulled out of the water usingn Billy Pugh net.
HFD reports rough seas, high surf and moderate wind. The swimmers were “overwhelmed by rough seas and current,” according to officials.
All individuals were safely brought to shore.
