The Hawai`i Police Department is reporting that the emergency 9-11 system is temporarily down in the Kona and Kau districts.

A fiber optic break in the area of Highway 190 and Highway 200 at the Daniel K. Inouye junction is supposedly the cause, according to Hawaiian Telcom.

Hawai`i County Civil Defense says the entire western portion of the island is experiencing an affect on communication.

Officials say work to resolve the issue is occurring “as quickly as possible.”

Anyone who needs police assistance is requested to use HPD’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or report directly to the nearest police or fire station.
