Impending Winter Storm Closes Mauna Loa Summit to Hikers

Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park announced Friday afternoon that the summit of Mauna Loa will be closed to all hiking over the weekend.

The closure is a result of a winter storm approaching the island.

Officials at the park say the closure will be reevaluated on a daily basis, but that hikers are not permitted to go into the area.

Hikes to Red Hill Cabin, at approximately 10,000 feet elevation, will remain open.
