Flash Flood Watch issued for the entire State until Wednesday

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the entire State of Hawaii until Wednesday night or later. This watch includes the County of Hawaii.

Increasingly moist and unstable air will overspread the islands today and Tuesday. A strong upper level disturbance will cause a surface trough or low to develop near the islands over the next couple of days, enhancing the potential for heavy downpours and thunderstorms that could lead to flash flooding. Any heavy showers will be spotty this afternoon, but could become more widespread by Tuesday. Conditions should gradually improve later in the day on Wednesday.

A mix of deep tropical moisture and an unstable air mass will result in potential for very heavy showers and even severe thunderstorms across the entire State of Hawaii through the weekend. Rain fall rate from heavier down pours and thunderstorms could cause streams to abruptly overflow and lead to flash flooding for low lying areas, stream mouths, and shoreline discharge flow lines.

Take all necessary precautions as flash floods happen with little to no warning. Continue to monitor your local news stations for weather updates and have a reliable way to get warnings for your location. Be prepared to take immediate action should the watch be upgraded to a Warning.

State Civil Defense strongly advises hikers, campers, and beach goers to reschedule their outings to a time when weather conditions improve and become more favorable. If in doubt, don’t go out.

Flash flooding can also cause a Brown Water Advisory at local beaches and streams due to possible contamination in the water from flash flooding. Bio hazardous materials such as: Chemicals, fecal matter, natural and man made debris can impact your health and well being. Please listen to your ocean safety officers, park rangers, and law enforcement officers advisories to stay out for your own safety due to the flash flooding.
